First in the Nation:  CFL Recycling Bill Passed - NRCM Blog
PSI's Associate of Policy and Programs, Sierra Fletcher testified along with Michael Bender from the Mercury Policy Project and Carole Cifrino, Maine Department of Environmental Protection at the state legislature.  In a campaign successfully organized by Matt Prindiville of the Natural Resources Council of Maine (NRCM)   Maine passes the first in the Nation bill to collect and recycle light bulbs that contain mercury.  Maine’s new bill directs light bulb manufacturers to share the costs and responsibility of recycling mercury-containing light bulbs.  The bill’s passage will set a national precedent for other states to follow.

April ISR Disposables - Painting a Greener Picture

Sierra Fletcher, PSI's Associate of Policy and Programs, discusses PSI’s role of working with manufacturers of products such as medical sharps  for the safe collection and disposal of used medical sharp devices to reduce the impact on the environment.  In PSI facilitated meetings with stakeholders, a modified producer responsibility system has been recommended as a model state program for Massachusetts with details to be worked out in future meetings.

PSI's Director of Sustainability, Jim Schrack, educated retailers on national product stewardship initiatives such as Montana's mercury thermostat legislation, Dell Computer's recycling program, Apple Computer's removal of toxics from its computers and Ace's take back of CFL light bulbs at the 2009 Spring Ace Hardware Show in Las Vegas (as printed in the Ace Show Vision newspaper).

Drugs in Our Drinking Water

PSI's Executive Director Scott Cassel comments on the disposal of leftover pharmaceuticals. Researchers have discovered that trace quantities of pharmaceuticals are present in most major public water systems in the United States. Some argue that more intensive, and more costly, water treatment is the solution, while others are pushing for more responsible prescription practices among health care professionals and insurance companies to reduce the massive amount of pharmaceutical leftovers.

Grant to help San Joaquin County CA dispose of paint, protect environment

In preparation for a producer responsibility system for paint in California, San Joaquin County will receive a grant to increase source reduction, reuse, recycling, and the purchase of recycled paint. PSI will consult on the project, which will draw heavily from the PSI facilitated national paint dialogue, including a Green Seal standard for recycled paint, which was also facilitated by PSI.

PSI Executive Director completes HHW Book Chapter on Product Stewardship
 
PSI Executive Director, Scott Cassel, recently completed a chapter on product stewardship for a textbook on household hazardous waste (HHW). The textbook was published in February 2008 by Government Institutes, under the umbrella of Rowman & Littlefield. The chapter covers the definition of product stewardship and extended producer responsibility, the growth of the movement in the U.S. and abroad, goals of a product stewardship system, and much more!  Those interested in purchasing the book may do so at www.nahmma.org.
